2014!

Happy New Year! Spiritism in Scotland wishes all its friends around the world a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year.

Monday, 22 April 2013

If you can, yet today:

Forget the tribulations and show a bigger smile to those who share life with you;

Give one more touch of happiness and beauty to your home;

Go visit, even for a short time, the sick person you wish to encourage;

Write, even if it’s a simple note, transmitting hope and tranquility, on somebody’s benefit;

Enhance your knowledge on the work area you’re currently employing your time on;

Extend some more optimism and joy to the ones you live with;

Try to forget – but really forget – everything that means a reason for sadness or exasperation;

Read some enlightening page and listen to music that sets peace to your heart;

Dedicate some minutes to meditate and pray;

Practice, at least, one good deed without telling it to anyone.

These indications of spiritual support, if respected, will do a great good to others, but will be good especially to you.

Spiritism in Brazil: A Vision of Change for the New Medical Paradigm

By HUW GRIFFITHS—

There was an article in a New Dawn Special Issue No. 5 (published in June 2008) which happened to mention the word ‘Spiritism’. I was unfamiliar with the term except that I’d heard it before in the context of a character called John of God, a spiritual therapist who lives in a remote part of central Brazil. He’s extremely well known in his home country for the fact that he performs operations on up to one thousand patients a day, sometimes using nothing more than an unsterilised blunt kitchen knife. It’s said that he can heal everything from the common cold to cancer and apparently often does. Thinking I was going to learn more about John of God, or someone like him, I read on, little realising that I was embarking on a much bigger adventure.

The article in question, entitled ‘Allan Kardec and the Way of the Spirit’, was about the French educator and intellectual Hippolyte Rivail (who wrote under the pseudonym Allen Kardec). Kardec, around the mid-1800’s, decided to make a sceptical but rational investigation of communication with spirits, the latest craze of the moment in Europe and North America. Despite his disciplined and dispassionate approach to the subject, Kardec – far from ending up critical of the phenomenon – instead was swept up by it, even to the point of putting his own stamp on how it developed.

If the literature of the time is anything to go by, Spiritualism was as much a novelty as it was a serious attempt to communicate with the world of spirits. It was characterised by séances, mediums and swathes of people who made things go bump in the dark. Though often depicted as being of primarily upper middle class appeal, it in fact had a broad following from the working classes right through to the upper echelons of society.

Despite my having a genuine interest, even belief, in the existence of intelligent life on higher vibrational levels than our own, images of levitating tables and shimmering clouds of ectoplasm issuing from some etched Edwardian’s flared nostril never really gripped me. However,

Learn with Nature

The sun shines from on high, in order to help everyone.

The stars group themselves in order.

The sky has its timetable for hours of light and of darkness.
*
Although it continues to be linked to the soil, the vegetable abandons the dark hole in search of light so that it may produce.
*
The bough that survived the storm yielded to its passage, nevertheless it continues to maintain its appropriate place.
*
The rock guarantees the life of the valley, by resigning itself to solitude.
*
The river reaches its objectives because it has learned to flow around obstacles.
*
The bridge serves the public without making exceptions, by asserting itself against extremism.
*
The vase is useful to the potter, after enduring the heat of the kiln.
*
The gem shines, after submitting to the files of the stonecutter.
*
The canal is able to fulfil its finalities, because it does not lose access to the reservoir.
*
The harvest always yields in accordance with the purposes of the sower.

Lecture with Haroldo Dutra Dias

On the 23th of March 2012 we welcomed in Edinburgh, with much happiness, the Brazilian speaker Haroldo Dutra Dias. The lecture was organised by the Spiritist Friends of Edinburgh (SFE) and sponsored by the British Union of Spiritist Societies (BUSS). The audience was comprised of members of SFE, Spiritist Friends of Dundee, Spiritist Group of Glasgow and some other London groups.
The theme of the lecture was ´The Gospel and Spiritism´. Haroldo related several episodes in the life of Allan Kardec including those when he began his research into the mediumship phenomena occurring at the time. Haroldo explained the difficulty faced by Kardec when he heard of his special and arduous mission regarding spiritism.
Kardec was assisted by numerous spirits that contributed to the elaboration of the most important Spiritist books that are the basis of the spiritist doctrine. Kardec was especially guided by a spirit of high moral known as ´Spirit of Truth´. Today there are still divergent opinions within spiritism regarding the true identity of this spirit.
Haroldo showed evidence that the Spirit of Truth was none other than Jesus, the most perfect moral model for mankind. To conclude his interesting talk, Haroldo emphasized the importance of following Divine laws, the moral code that is present not in sacred books but inside each of us, in our DNA!

Nearest Station: nearest tube station
Map: View location on a map
Times: Tuesday to Saturday: 10:00 - 18:00
Admission: Free

About the event:
Nosso Lar, Chico Xavier and The Medium’s Mothers are the highlights of the film festival to take place in London between February 21st to 25th

Themes such as life after death, reincarnation and communication with the spirits are part of the imaginary, and in many cases, of the daily lives of millions of people all over the world. And as art imitates life, so does cinema. Simultaneously with the growing popular interest in spiritual matters, there is an unparalleled growth of the so-called Spiritistualist cinema, a movie genre that deals with spiritual, metaphysical and religious experiences.

In the past two decades, beginning with the release of the prize winning movie Ghost (1990), films on spiritualist themes have been in the rise not only in Hollywood but also in independent cinema, becoming box office hits in many territories. The Portuguese speaking countries are no exception. Brazil alone has produced several films over the last few years that, apart from entertaining, also inspire and bring hope to the viewers.

In this context, the Queen Mary, University of London hosts a film exhibition with the best of these productions – the 1st Lusophonic Spiritist / Spiritualist Film Festival, which takes places in February from 21st to 25th. The event is promoted in partnership with The British Union of Spiritist Societies (BUSS) with the support of the International Spiritist Council. All film sessions are free.

The festival - The free programme includes huge box office hits that attracted millions of people to theaters in Brazil, but have never been shown in the UK,

Sorrow

If sorrow knocks at your door, stupefying your mind or paralyzing your arms, flee this mental intoxication as soon as you can.
If you are ill, take care of your sick body in the conviction that you cannot fix, with tears, a watch that is out of order.
If you’ve made a mistake, try to reconsider your own fault, readjusting your course without vanity, admitting that you are not the first, nor will you be the last to find yourself in a situation needing correction.
If you have yielded to temptation, lift yourself up and proceed on your way, with the assignment life has marked out for you, in the certainty that no one pays off a debt by virtue of useless and excessive worrying about mistakes made.
If friends deserted you, think of the tree, which at times needs pruning in order to get a new lease on life.
If you are beset by great afflictions in your home, awaken and know that each home provides the basis of education.
If you have suffered material injuries, remember that often the loss of a ring is the defense of the arm.
If someone has offended your dignity forget your resentment by deflecting that a man of good sense would never dress up his appearance with filthy trash.
If impatience characterizes your habitual gestures, calm down by observing that small imbalances may ultimately become great disturbances.
Whatever your problem may be, remember that all sorrow is a destructive shadow and that no shadow can manage to remain in the heart that focuses on work and strives to serve.

First Spiritist Walk in Scotland

Dear all,

The First Spiritist Walk in Scotland was a success. Different people from Dundee and Edinburgh have spent some time together and walk around the woods in Tayport in the north of Fife.

 A nice group, with friendly people and which ended in a lovely dinner cooked by Paula, Marina and Beatriz.

The next walk will be around February and the theme will be: Second Spiritist Walk in Scotland: walking on the snow.

SO prepare yourselves.
